1949 Press Photo "X-Ray" vision of radar at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The "X-Ray" vision of radar came into operation in the bombing of Japan with the combination of both radar and the optic sights playing leading roles in destruction from the air. High speed planes obviated the use of sights that depended solely on vision since by the time the target was recognized it was too late to drop the bombs. With the radar sights, targets could be recognized from many miles away and the bombardier would be ready in time to make a "strike".

Photo is dated 1949.

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
