1957 Press Photo Sahara Dignitaries welcome General Charles De Gaulle

Robed and turbaned dignitaries of the vast Sahara Territory turn out to welcome former Free French leader General Charles De Gaulle (left) on a visit to Bordj Ressot, near Tindouf, Sahara. De Gaulle, who headed the Provisional Government of France from September 1944 to January 1946 is greeting Abdallah Ould Mohamed Lamine, chieftain of the Lahcen Ou Ahmad Tribe and Chieftain of Tindouf. The sprawling territory, whose natural resources are only now being put to use is viewed hopefully as a rich area of the future.
