1964 Press Photo United Nations British Troops guard Refugee Building in Cyprus

Encircled by conflict, Turkish children play innocently outside a school in Ayios Theodore as two armored vehicles stand guard. British troops of the United Nations Truce Force were ordered to guard the building which women, children and elderly people sought refuge in during the five days of heavy fighting between Turkish and Greek Cypriots. The British also were given the order to return fire if a direct assault was made on the Cyprus School by the Greeks.
