Missing in this scene is the mess sergeant wielding a big serving spoon and growling to keep the line moving. In an experiment now underway at Ft. Lewis Washington, the Army has done away with the mess sergeant. The men felt they weren't getting enough from him. Now they can serve themselves as much as they choose. Going through this sergeant less chow line are engineers from the 86th Engineer Battalion.
