Boy, 12, wins spelling bee when opponent trips on "foulard". The word "foulard" proved too much for Charles Michel, 14 of Bellaire, Ohio, representing the Wheeling, W. Va., Daily News in the Seventh Annual National Spelling Bee in Wash., D.C. As a result Ward Randall, 12, of Whitehall, Ill., representing the Register-Republican of that city won the two trophies and the $1,000 first prize. Young Michel received the second prize of $500. Ward Randall holding the bag containing the $1,000 prize money is seen at the right. George B. Woods, Dean of the American University and chairman of the spelling bee contest is seen holding a plaque which was also awarded to Randall. On the left is Charles Michel.

Photo is dated 1931.
