Standfield said after leaving the house of commons, that while accepting the governments decision it would have been "preferable" to induce restrictive special legislation for parliamentary approval. And was not contesting their claim that a "state of apprehended insurrection" existed in Quebec, "yet" he said "I must recognize that this is the most serious drastic measure the government could have taken"
