1949 Press Photo Willam Corak of Westinghouse Freezes Banana in Liquid Nitrogen

Corak, research engineer, demonstrates how fast the nitrogen in the jar will freeze any ordinary object. After not more than two seconds in that 340 degrees-below-zero temperature, the banana breaks up like rock under a hammer, as seen at right.
