1961 Press Photo Sharon Balkcum Open Heart Surgery Chicago King & Lilly Balkcum

Sharon Balkcum, 14, of Lancaster, South Carolina, fully recovered from open heart surgery which saved her life, and is shown as she left hospital with her parents, King and Lilly. Her heart was opened in a four-hour operation on August 17th to remove an obstruction. Doctors say she can now perform activities normal for her age.
