1962 Press Photo B Johnson Tests Grass in Colchicine Univ California Los Angeles

Dipping the roots of a sterile hybrid grass in the drug colchicine, University of California, Los Angeles, scientist B. Lennart Johnson shows how he induced fertility in its seeds. The discovery produces a promising new grass for possible use on California wild lands blackened by fire. A cross between Indian rice grass and a needle grass, the new strain seems rugged enough to thrive on the arid hill and will be tested on range lands by other University of California scientists at Riverside and Davis.
