1971 Press Photo New Year Celebration refuse and debris in Rome

Refuse and debris litter this block after Romans celebrated arrival of the New Year in a typical Italian manner as usual-by tossing bottles, dishes, potted plants, glasses, old clothes and anything else householders wanted to be rid of, into the streets. The gesture is symbolic of house cleaning and since Pagan times this method has been a feature of Italy's New Year's celebration.
