1958 Press Photo Old bolted rail joint and new continuously welded rail joint

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Mobile, Alabama: The clickety-clack of the railroad track may join the clippety-clop of the carriage horse in oblivion before too long. The distinctive railroad sound is made by present-day bolted rail joints like the one in foreground at Mobile, Alabama. But now, the Chemetron Corporation has announced a new NCG continuous-rail welding system to provide a smooth and quiet ride by eliminating the gaps between bolted sections in favor of an uninterrupted rail, like that in background, stretching for long distances.

Photo is dated 1958.

Photo measures 9 x 7.25 inches.
