Credit - ACME and NEA Washington, D.C. - Samuel R. Beard, testifies under oath before the Mead War Profits Investigation Hearing (Senate), that his profession is "gambler" and told the committee that he had cashed checks totaling $46,000 originally drawn by the Erie Basin Metal Products Company of Elgin, Illinois. Beard, who served a jail sentence for income tax evasion, told the committee that the checks were used for "office expenses, traveling and advances" to the Washington representative of the company. The Erie Basin Metal Products Company is one of the firms accused of huge war profits.
