1939 Press Photo Sculpture "Mother Bear and Cubs" by James L. Gehr - mjx37230

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
"Mother Bear and Cubs" by James L. Gehr, a Milwaukeean known for his animal groups, is the largest sculpture to be shown in the coming Seven Arts exhibition at the Milwaukee Art institute. The piece was executed under the Wisconsin Art Project which lends it to the institute. Mr. Gehr has designed his work especially for playground use with its rounded surfaces and absence of sharp corners. It is a splendid piece of design. While it is not realistic in modeling, it presents the playfulness of the two cubs and the amused tolerance of the mother bear.

Photo is dated 1939.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
