Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Restored to its former splendor at a cost of approximately two-and-a-quarter-million-dollars, the fabulous Louis XVI Theater at the Palace of Versailles awaits only the removal of temporary scaffolding before it is ready of the forthcoming state visit of Queen Elizabeth of England. The massive stage was filled with 200 soldiers pressed into service as "extras" when the theater was inaugurated in 1770. Since that time, the structure had fallen into a severe state of deterioration, but has been restored by an army of workmen. Queen Elizabeth will attend a performance of the Paris Opera Company in the theater during her visit to France.

Photo is dated 1957.

Photo measures 7 x 9 inches.
