Description
The seizure of the Suez Canal by Egypt and the subsequent international crisis all stemmed form this peaceful spot on the Nile River, about five miles south of Aswan, Egypt. It's the site of the proposed Aswan high dam, by means of which Egyptian leaders hope to double their country's arable land. Modern barges provide a base for surveying operations as a felucca, traditional Nile sailing vessel, wafts by. Refusal of foreign loans for the costly dam led to President Nasser's Suez action.
