1939 Press Photo Evergreens planted at city hall, to prevent suicide attempts

Acting on the theory that a collection of evergreens make a cemetery, wags at the city hall dubbed the first floor area under the well "The Cemetery" after these potted evergreesn were put in place Monday. The evergreens block off the open space, known for eyars as "Suicide Well" and will keep persons out of the path of falling boies. One person died of shock after being almost hit a few months ago when a man leaped from the eighth floo.
