1950 Press Photo Freedom Bell by US public subscription, raised to City Hall top

The 10-ton Freedom Bell, created for Communist-surrounded West Berlin by US public subscription under the sponsorship of the "Crusade for Freedom", is raised by windlass to top of the 200-foot tower of the City Hall. Today the bell was dedicated by Gen. Lucius D. Clau, US chairman of the crusade, as thousands of Berliners heard the bell ring for the first time.
