1973 Press Photo Sketches Reminiscent of Tarawa Battle and a New Landing Craft

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
When Marines stormed Tarawa atoll in World War II , Sergeant Hughes Michael was armed with a handful of pencils and a sketch pad, and he created the scene on the left as fellow Marines ducked enemy fire on their way to the beach. Today, as a shipyard worker at Ingalls Shipbuilding division of Litton Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Michael sketches scenes of a new Tarawa, the Navy's new general purpose amphibious assault ship (LHA), named after the island battle in the Pacific. Michael's sketch at right shows a crane preparing to lift a propeller aboard the ship, one of five LHAs being built by Ingalls. Michael is one of 16 Ingalls' employees now working on the LHA program who also participated in the battle of Tarawa.

Photo is dated 1973.
