1976 Press Photo USS Tarawa, LHA-1 Amphibious Assault Ship shown on Sea Trials

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
United States Navy, Aircraft Carriers: Viewed from the rear is the United States Navy's newest and largest amphibious assault ship, the USS Tarawa (LHA-1) as she performed sea trials in the Gulf of Mexico. The 820-foot-long, 40,000 ton vessel can embark, deploy and land a fully equipped Marine assault force by helicopter, landing craft or a combination of the two. A single LHA class ship performs many of the functions which otherwise would require four different types of amphibious ships.

Photo is dated 1976.

Photo measures 8 x 10.5 inches.
