1942 Press Photo US Cruiser Astoria, carried AMB Hiroshi Saito, home to Japan

United States Navy: The United States Heavy Cruiser Astoria, which was announced as sunk by Naval action of the enemy in the opening phases of the Solomon Islands Battles, last August. Ironically enough, it was this ship that carried the ashes of the Japanese Ambassador to the United States, Hiroshi Saito, home to Japan after Saito died in 1939, in the United States. The Navy Department, in the same announcement in Washington, October 12, said that the heavy cruiser Vincennes and Quincy were also lost in the same action.
