1951 Press Photo Antiaircraft Guided Missile by Douglas Aircraft and Bell

One of the newest antiaircraft guided missiles roared upward at an unannounced base in a firing test. The army ordinance corps is sponsoring the development of the weapon by the Bell telephone laboratories and the Douglas Aircraft Co. The navy previously announced that it had a similar weapon in production. A complex system enables the pilotless missile to destroy a high flying plane. Guided missiles like this Nike type rocket will be used in Milwaukee's antiaircraft defense. A complex system enables the pilotless rocket to seek out and destroy a high flying plane as far as 35 miles away. The rocket roared upward from an unnamed test base in 1951.
