1943 Press Photo Frozen guns and equipment tested at Proving Ground in Canada

The ordnance winter proving ground---Shilo, Manitoba, Canada---The Ordnance Department of the United States Army has reverted back to nature---nature's elements at their worst with average temperatures below those officially reported from the battlefields of Russia. Hundreds of miles north of the United States-Canadian border is a camp with 900 soldiers of the Ordnance Department. It is officially known as the Winter Proving Ground. Very different from the average Army camp, it's most marked deviation is the fact that the thermometer rather than the bugle calls the men to duty. No matter what time of day the temperature takes a dive, that's when the Ordnance soldiers have to get busy testing equipment and weapons of all kin for the Army (United States) (Wars) (Canada) (World War II)
