1952 Press Photo Landing Stage in Stantsina Volga Along Moscow Volga Canal

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The Volga River, besides being the subject of much of Russian's song and legend, is a great highway of commerce. Since the middle ages, shallow draft vessels have plied its slow moving waters carrying goods and passengers. Now, with the completion of the Moscow Volga canal, its boats go from the Caspian Sea to the capital itself. The landing stages, as here at Stantsina Volga, are usually old barges anchored to the shore. When the larger vessels come along, the country people wait on deck to catch the boat, to deliver their goods to its hold, or just for the excitement of seeing the ship come in.

Photo is dated 1952.

Photo measures 9.5 x 7.75 inches.
