1951 Press Photo Country's largest Stockyard empty, Chicago, Illinois

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The livestock supply has dwindled steadily at the Chicago stockyards, the country's largest, as cattlemen hold their animals back from regular channels. Big packers claim that price ceiling are too low and they can't buy at that price. Smaller packers are buying animals, some at over ceiling prices. Price officials say that ranchers are holding back in the hope that controls will die June 30. Chicago pens on a heavy day are compared above with pens Thursday, when less than half of normal beef cattle shipments came into the yards. Only a few cattle were visible in the yards at any one time Thursday. (Illinois, Cities, Chicago, Stock Yards)
