Eugene Wagner, one of the original residents of the neighborhood, built his home in 1940. Thurston Forest, a four-block area on Milwaukee's Far North Side, is 50 years old this year. The area flanks Thurston Ave. between N. 33rd and N. 35th Its. The narrow, tree-lines streets of stately Cape Cods and colonials seem part of a New England village. "It's an extremely relaxing place to come to after work," says 12-year resident Earl Haywood in his living room. "It's very livable and removed form the normal, hectic pace of city life. As soon as you hit Teutonia, the change claps you in the face." Thurston Forest, where former Milwaukee Mayor Henry W. Maier lived until the mid-1970s, is bordered by N. Teutonia Ave. on the east and W. Silver Spring Dr. on the south. But 33rd and 34th Its. come to dead-ends before reaching Silver Spring, and so the outside world has been slow to discover Thurston Forest's charms. Thurston Forest.
