1994 Press Photo Kitty Dyble-Thompson of Milwaukee creates art on the road

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Kitty Dyble-Thompson of Milwaukee, creates a piece of art on the road during the Historic Third Ward Best Block Party late Friday afternoon. She says she goes to different festivals creating her pieces with chalk. "The fact that it's temporary, it becomes a shared experience for the festival. Then it's gone," she said when asked if it bothers her that her artwork disappears over time. The annual block party continues Saturday and features a re-enactment of Milwaukee's fire of 1892, with flares jumping between buildings, multiple explosions and other special effects done with lights, fog machines and pyrotechnics from Bartolotta Fireworks. The 1892 fire claimed 4 lives, destroyed 440 buildings and is considered to be one of the largest in the city's history.
