1978 Press Photo Anger at a Salisbury memorial service in South Africa

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
White anger over the shooting down of a passenger aircraft and subsequent murder of 10 of the 18 survivors by black terrorists was expressed in this demonstration at a Salisbury memorial service for the victims. Some of the anger was directed against Prime Minister Ian Smith because he had recently held secret discussions with terrorist leader Joshua Nkomo, who claimed his forces had shot down the Viscount airliner but denied they had killed the survivors.
