1982 Press Photo Surplus lathes donated to University of Wisconsin, Madison

Many World War II surplus machines donated by the state, such as the hand-operated lathes shown above, stand idle much of the time at the University of Wisconsin - Madison's College of Engineering. In contrast, students are constantly working with a precision machine tool given to the college by Giddings & Lewis. The industrial consortia program is helping the college to update its equipment.
