For four generations, tobacco has been harvested on the Neli Skaar farm near Cottage Grove. Skaar, manager of the Wisconsin Tobacco Growers Association, and his grandson David harvested three acres of Type 54 tobacco this season. David is the fourth generation to harvest tobacco there. Because of the time involved in using hand labor, most tobacco farmers only harvest two to three acres. The Skaars were joined by two other young people in the harvest, which took about one week.
