Workmen dug up former gasoline storage tanks at Richardson's Automotive, 185 S. Main St., Thiensville in an effort to find the source of benzene that is contaminating well water. Benzene was measured by the State Department of Natural Resources at 2,800 parts per billion in the garage's well; 6.8 parts per billion is considered safe. A DNR representative said Friday a hole was found in one of the tanks indicating that gasoline could have leaked into the soil. The property was a gasoline service station before Russ Richardson opened an automobile repair shop there in 1980.

Photo measures 9.5 x 7.25 inches. Photo is dated 10-30-1984.
