Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
(John Staszak) used sign language during an interview. For 14 days last winter, Milwaukee County locked up a profoundly deaf man in a mental ward and did not tell him why. "I was scared," said John Staszak, who talked to a reporter through a sign-language interpreter. Staszak also cannot speak. It was the second time in five months that the young man had been locked in a mental ward at the Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex without being provided a certified interpreter. (Wisconsin).
