1993 Press Photo Gypsies walk through the center of Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania

With a young child in hand, two women Gypsies walk through the center of the old town of Sibiu in the Transylvania section of Romania in April 1993. They are usually prevented from entering the center square by police. Romanians' loathing of Gypsies is reinforced by violent Gypsy gangs that dominate Bucharest's theft and prostitution. But, there is a growing awareness of the need to help the Gypsies.
