Jason Poulakos (left) and Art Hernandez, of Valley Service Co. Oak Creek, study the inside of a barrel they are building for Badger State Tanning Corp. To meet new pollution-control requirements, the Milwaukee tannery ordered four such barrels- 10 feet long and 10 feet in diameter- to replace older vessels used in the tanning process. Wood is still used for the vessels because it is less expensive and retains heat better than stainless steel or plastic. The barrels cost up to $60,000 each, including mechanical parts. barrels
