1988 Press Photo Youngsters play in fire hydrant water during Wisconsin heat

Youngsters beat the sweltering 101-degree temperature Tuesday as they played in the cooling spray of an open fire hydrant at North 16th St. and West Meinecke Avenue. Police reported dozens of illegally opened hydrants throughout the city. People who want to legally open hydrants can get wrenches and sprinklers to attach to the hydrants through the Department of public works.
