Little Erin McCarthy's grit has allowed her to live long enough for science to catch up with her medical problem. Erin, 7, of Port Washington left University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics after a rare second bone marrow transplant. Her body's defense system is slowly on the mend. Erin was born with an inability to produce one of dozens of enzymes necessary for survival. This left her with severe combined immune deficiency, a disorder in which the body is almost defenseless against all sorts of illnesses and infections. Diseases - I
