1994 Press Photo Worker sweeps floor at Stericycle Inc. in Sturtevant

A worker sweeps around a bale of shredded plastic Wednesday at Stericycle Inc's medical-waste recycling plant at 14035 Leetsbir Road, Sturtevant. The plant, which opened late last year, can treat more than 12,000 tons of waste annually. The waste material is compressed and shredded, and then sterilized in a microwave oven. The end product is recycled into new medical products or put in a landfill. Stericycle, based in Deerfield, Illinois, has eight plants around the country.
