1985 Press Photo William Stratton At His Tax Evasion Trail In Chicago

Chicago- The $46,000 tax evasion jury trial for former Illinois Gov. William G. Stratton opened Wednesday with the government charging that Stratton pocketed political contributions for his own uses. The defense said it would prove that the former "boy wonder" of Illinois Republican politics had received voluntary contributions of a nontaxable nature and spent them "to keep his image a political life and to meet expenses far beyond his official salary." Stratton, 51, is charged with evading federal income taxes during the last four years of his eight years in the governor's mansion.
