1963 Press Photo 40 ton front end loader, Untied States Steel Company

A driverless, 40 ton front end loader, remotely controlled by a radio system, is being used to open hearth furnace pits of a US Steel Corporation plant to scrape, lift and carry hot slag to vehicles for transport dumping areas, An operator, using a lightweight control panel suspended from his shoulders, controls all functions of the unmanned tractor normally accomplished manually by a mounted operator.
