Members of the Society of Creative Anachronism on stage at the Shorewood Woman's Club. All the world is a kingdom. At least that's what Milwaukee members of the Society of Creative Anachronism believe. Douglas Stewart, who holds the rank of baron in the group, describes the worldwide organization as a "medieval recreation group" that focuses on the more pleasurable aspects of life in the years between 600 and 1600. The Barrel-Riders Pub has a hobbit theme. The bar was named by owner/hobbit-enthusiast Jame C. Haertel for one of J.R.R.Tolkien's character Bilbo Baggins, known, among others things, for a wild barrel-ride. The walls of the bar are decorated with paintings depicting scenes from Tolkien's books. Douglas R. Stewart and other members of the Society for Creative Anachronism hold ceremonial courts. Members of the society create medieval personas. Stewart drives a truck for a living but in his fantasy medieval life he is a piper and holds the title of Baron of Milwaukee.
