Pat Anderson, a house parent at the Southern Wisconsin Center, helped Jan Kay Schmidt work a puzzle. An overdose of insulin in 1979 left Schmid, at 18, brain-damaged and unable to care for herself. Right: Before the overdose, Schmid's graduation picture.
