1986 Press Photo Rita Doro and Green Lake teammates in Special Olympics.

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Doro listened intently as her coach, Dallas Lewallen, went over game strategy during a timeout. Rita Doro is not tall. She doesn't have the skills of a National Basketball Association player and can't slam dunk. But don't tell her she isn't a heroine on the basketball court. Don't tell her she doesn't have the heart to be a winner. For four quarters Friday, Doro, 38, was a blue-chip player as she sparked her Green Lake Special Olympics basketball team to a 30 - 29 victory in the Wisconsin Special Olympics Indoor Sports Tournament. Dwarfed by other players, the Olympian from Berlin, Wisconsin played the entire game, cheering, scoring and encouraging her team to victory. Doro and her teammates were among more than 900 Special Olympians who gathered in Oshkosh for the annual indoor meet. Athletes from across the state tested their skills in basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics. Clinics were held in sports, health, art, crafts and crime prevention.

Photo is dated 1986.
