1988 Press Photo WI volunteers Betty and Dick Schneider return from Brazil

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Betty and Dick Schneider have seen, and felt, suffering in other hands. They recently had returned from a month's stay in the Amazon basin, where Dick volunteered as a dentist at a health clinic in the city of Santarem (pronounced Sant-a-REEM), about a third of the way up the river in north central Brazil. Betty, although not professionally trained, worked as his assistant there. The clinic was established in 1969 by a Marquette University medical school graduate (Schneider is also a Marquette graduate), who became a medical missionary after witnessing the poverty of Brazil while passing through the country during a stint in the Navy.
