Taking Health to Heart: People care about their hearts. That point was driven home last week when thousands of area residents, many of them senior citizens, turned out for a free blood-cholesterol screening program held at St. Luke's Hospital. At least 5,000 people turned out for the screenings, several thousand more than sponsors had predicted. At one point last Wednesday, there was a three hour wait for the test, even though employees were doing the tests at the rate off 100 an hour. The screening was extended an extra day to serve those who had to be turned away each day when the testing hours ended. "I think the sponsor probably underestimated the turnout," said St. Luke's public relations secretary Bonney Reese, who added that those waiting in line were remarkably patient, and that the testers received no more than a few complaints. The screening was sponsored by Lever Brothers. May 5, 1986.
