An idea for a product to prevent algae growth in swimming pools and ponds led to the founding of Great Lakes Biochemical Co., In., in 1956 by Robert M. Stern (center), president and research director of the firm. Shown with him in one of the Milwaukee-based company's laboratories are his sister-in-law, Mrs. Hilda G. Stern, the firm's secretary, treasurer and advertising director, and his brother, James F. Stern, corporate executive vice president.
