1980 Press Photo Leucaena Plant Having Trouble Growing in Milwaukee Climate

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
This little plant, called Leucaena, is having trouble growing in Milwaukee's climate, but in the tropics it is becoming a super-tree that yields wood, feed for cattle, fertilizer and a number of other things. Holding the plant is John Dorney, a graduate student in botany at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, who is growing the plant at his home at 3601 North Murray Avenue. Paul Thoma, who concentrated on the tree in working toward his master's degree, described Leucaena - a native of Central America - as having great commercial promise throughout the tropics.

Photo measures 6 x 10 inches. Photo is dated 12-18-1980.
