Ships M - The below-deck engine room with its levers and switches, was a fascinating place, The ship's two boilers developed 1,200 horsepower. The ship spent its last years as a petroleum tanker. - Whale of a tour - It was a special day for Ray Baker, 9, and his brother, Jeff, 6, of Superior as the boys, (peering out of cabin porthole above), toured the whaleback freighter Meteor ahead of the summer crowds at the Maritime Museum on Superior Barker's Island. Built in 1896. the Meteor was one of 40 of the round bodied ships to come out of the old American Steel Barge Company yards in Superior between 1888 and 1898. The Meteor was turned into a museum in 1978. Saturday it was opened to the public for the summer and may be toured daily between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
