Walter F. Mondale, son of a Methodist preacher, grew up in a succession of Minnesota small towns. He is shown as a child (above) in this undated photo. As a US Senate designate (right) in 1964, Mondale, Minnesota's attorney general at the time cleared personal papers form his desk. Mondale played tennis (below) with members of his staff in Houston, Texas, in October 1976 before a debate with his Republican vice presidential opponents, Senator Robert Dole (R-Kan.).
