The first Siberian crane ever bred in captivity rested after emerging from its 4-inch spotted egg Thursday at the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo. When the chick grew tired from breaking out of its egg, foundation Director George Archibald used tweezers to help break away parts of the shell. Ornithologists said they won't be able to determine the sex of the crane for about a year.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 06-15-1981.
