1980 Press Photo Cellblock view at Yuma Territorial Prison, now a state park.

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Thousands of visitors each year walk though the cellblocks of the former Yuma Territorial Prison, now one of America's most popular state parks. It was hardly pleasant for inmates of the prison, which some said made the notorious Devil's Island in French Guyana look like a county club. Prisoners were locked behind the grated doors, freezing in winter and stifling in summer. A total of 3,069 persons were confined there in its 33 years of operation, ending in 1909

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 07-21-1980.
