The trap door which covers the nest is made of web and moist earth. Right after making the door, the spider slams it closed with great force. The soft door is molded in that way into the exact shape of the burrow opening. When it dries, it fits so snugly that it is water-tight. Right: The spider's nest is shown in a cross-section. It is warm, dry and lined with silk. The spider usually waits near the door for its prey. When an insect walks across the door, the spider feels the movement and rushes out to grab it.
